Amtrak Resumes Service After Temporary Suspension

By David Shepardson

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. passenger railroad Amtrak announced on Wednesday that it has restored service following a temporary suspension of all train services between New York and Washington due to overhead power issues in Philadelphia, affecting thousands of travelers.

The suspension was caused by downed overhead wires blocking the tracks. Trains that were already in service were delayed at a station until normal operations could resume. Amtrak has experienced several significant service disruptions in New Jersey over the past six months.

Amtrak reported the resumption of single-track service, advising riders to expect delays of at least 30 minutes as crews continued restoration efforts in the area.

In August, Amtrak and NJ Transit implemented increased examination, inspection, and maintenance activities to prevent disruptions. Approximately 12 million passengers traveled in 2023 between Washington and Boston on Amtrak.

Amtrak carries about five times more passengers between New York and Washington than airlines do.

Additionally, Amtrak confirmed that service had resumed between New York Penn Station and New Haven, Connecticut, after a fire east of Penn Station on Tuesday had halted trains.
