Severe Floods and Landslides in Bosnia and Herzegovina
By Daria Sito-Sucic
Overview
At least 22 people have died in severe floods and landslides that have devastated villages across Bosnia and Herzegovina. The damage has been significant, with officials reporting widespread destruction in this impoverished Balkan country.
Impact on Infrastructure
A key transport route connecting central and southern Bosnia has suffered major damage, with flash floods submerging properties and sweeping away livestock. The railway connecting Bosnia with the Croatian port of Ploce was destroyed over a 17 km stretch towards Mostar, showing signs of collapse with sections hanging in the air.
Ongoing Rescue Operations
Rescuers continue to search for survivors in southern towns like Konjic and Jablanica, which were among the worst affected. Six individuals are still unaccounted for.
Damage Estimates
While the full extent of the damage remains unclear, early estimates suggest the losses will be significant. A regional railways spokesman mentioned that the daily revenue loss affecting cargo and passenger transport approximates 280,000 Bosnian marka ($157,000). Repairs on the railway lines are set to begin next week.
Statements from Companies
Several Bosnian exporters, such as ArcelorMittal Zenica and Aluminium Industries, typically rely on this rail link for transporting goods. UK-based Adriatic Metals will temporarily switch to road transport until the railway is operational again, stating that ongoing operations won't be impacted.
