European Central Bank Banknotes Redesign
FRANKFURT (Reuters) – The European Central Bank (ECB) is seeking a new design for euro banknotes, with potential subjects including prominent cultural figures like German composer Ludwig van Beethoven, as well as themes involving birds and rivers.
This marks the first redesign of euro banknotes since their introduction 23 years ago, aiming to enhance their appeal and relatability. The current designs depict generic bridges and windows.
Designers can select from two main themes: European culture or a mix of rivers, birds, and European institutions.
For the cultural theme, the front of each of the euro’s six denominations will showcase renowned Europeans:
- Maria Callas (Greek opera singer)
- Ludwig van Beethoven
- Marie Curie (Polish-French scientist)
- Miguel de Cervantes (Spanish author)
- Leonardo da Vinci (Italian artist and inventor)
- Bertha von Suttner (Austrian peace activist)
These figures, suggested by independent experts and chosen by the ECB, may spark controversy, as only six of the euro zone’s 20 nations are represented.
The back side will feature scenes of cultural events or institutions like a library or a music festival.
Alternatively, the second design motif will display birds and rivers on the front, while the reverse will depict European institutions, including the ECB itself.
The ECB plans to initiate the design contest this year, with the selection process concluding in 2026. However, the new banknotes are expected to enter circulation several years later.
