Treasury Secretary Nominee Scott Bessent

Treasury Secretary Nominee Scott Bessent is widely expected to secure confirmation from Congress. But how will ‘Bessenomics’ boost growth and cut debt without inducing inflation needed for the United States’ Golden Age?

BCA Research believes the new Treasury Secretary plans to pursue a policy mix, referred to as ‘Bessenomics,’ that aims to enhance economic growth while stabilizing the public debt-to-GDP ratio.

Key Pillars of Bessenomics

The expected policy mix is built on three main pillars:
1. Currency Depreciation: This would substitute for high import tariffs.
2. Fiscal Policy Calibration: Adjusting fiscal policies to balance growth and debt management.
3. Increased U.S. Oil Supply: Enhancing domestic oil supply to deflate crude prices.

Bessent may advocate for dollar depreciation over tariffs to enhance U.S. manufacturing competitiveness and generate industrial jobs. BCA suggests this could mitigate the adverse effects of tariffs on markets and the economy.

Bessent might also collaborate with the Federal Reserve to significantly lower interest rates, provided the government and Congress enact cuts in fiscal spending. This blend of tighter fiscal and looser monetary policy has historically resulted in currency weakness.

To prevent rising inflation expectations and soaring bond yields, BCA hypothesizes that Bessent’s strategy could include reducing fiscal spending and lowering oil prices. These actions, together with “proper macro communication and credibility,” may sufficiently lower bond yields despite dollar decline.

Challenges Ahead

However, implementing ‘Bessenomics’ may face numerous challenges. BCA warns that various economic, political, and geopolitical constraints might hinder the Trump administration’s ability to realize its policy agenda fully, leading to outcomes that may differ from the administration’s objectives.
