Bitcoin Investors Holding Unrealized Losses
The average new Bitcoin investor is currently holding an unrealized loss, which could result in significant sell-side pressure if there’s a further market correction, according to a report by analysts at Glassnode published on Wednesday.
Market Weakness Anticipated
The analysts stated, “Until the spot price reclaims the short-term holder cost basis of $62,400, there is an expectation for further market weakness.” While total unrealized losses among all Bitcoin holder cohorts remain historically low, this week’s report highlighted that short-term holders are an exception and may experience considerable market pressure.
Short-Term Holder Pressure
“The Short-Term Holder cohort, representing new demand in the market, appears to be shouldering the majority of the market pressure. Their unrealized losses dominate overall, and the magnitude has consistently increased over the last few months,” Glassnode analysts noted.
The analysts observed that the magnitude of unrealized losses among short-term holders closely resembles the volatile price fluctuations seen in 2019. During that year, Bitcoin’s price began around $4,000, peaked at approximately $12,000 in the summer, and ultimately ended at about $7,000, as per Coingecko data.
MVRV Ratio Under Breakeven
This week’s report indicated that the short-term holder market value to realized value (MVRV) ratio has dropped below the breakeven point of 1.0. The analysts said this metric is now at levels akin to August 2023, during the prolonged recovery rally from Bitcoin’s drop to around $16,000 following the FTX collapse in November 2022.
The MVRV metric assesses the ratio between the current market value of coins held by short-term investors, those holding coins for less than 155 days, and their realized value, or the price at which they acquired these coins.
Bitcoin’s price rose by a modest 0.3% in the past 24 hours, trading at $56,724 as of 9:00 a.m. ET. Bitcoin’s dominance stands at 53.7%, while Ethereum’s dominance is at 13.8%, based on CoinGecko data.
