LayerZero Integrates with Bitcoin’s Rootstock

LayerZero, the bridging protocol facilitating communication between different crypto networks, is set to connect with Bitcoin sidechain Rootstock, marking its first integration with the original blockchain.

Rootstock aims to address Bitcoin’s “isolation” from other blockchains caused by its absence of native smart contracts, a limitation that LayerZero can overcome, as detailed in a recent announcement shared with CoinDesk.

The Bitcoin blockchain’s inability to support smart contracts, a necessary component for decentralized finance (DeFi) services, hinders its adoption. Despite holding more value than all other blockchains combined, Bitcoin’s DeFi capabilities remain undeveloped. This has led developers to explore ways to leverage the immense liquidity in Bitcoin (BTC) and enable bridging to the broader crypto ecosystem.

With the collaboration between Rootstock and LayerZero, developers will have the opportunity to create applications on the Bitcoin sidechain that can interact with over 100 other blockchains, including Ethereum and Solana, as mentioned in the announcement.
