Burberry Shares Rise Following RBC Upgrade

Shares of Burberry (LON:BRBY) saw a rise on Wednesday after an upgrade by RBC Capital Markets to an "outperform" rating from "sector perform," with a price target increase from GBp 650 to GBp 900.

This change reflects RBC's optimistic view of Burberry as a potential acquisition target, notably by Moncler, along with a strategic pivot under CEO Joshua Schulman towards a more focused product lineup, particularly in outerwear.

RBC analysts indicated that despite recent gains, Burberry's valuation remains low, offering substantial upside potential in the event of a buyout.

They also noted Burberry’s previous attempts to expand into leather goods had mixed responses, in contrast to its traditionally strong outerwear segment.

Under Schulman’s leadership, Burberry appears to be realigning with its heritage strengths. RBC believes this focused strategy enhances brand authenticity and could make the company an attractive acquisition target for Moncler, which leads the outerwear market.

Analysts imply that Moncler or similar companies may view this alignment as a growth opportunity, as Burberry’s current market value is less than half of its peak valuation in FY23, possibly allowing for a favorable acquisition price.

The upcoming interim results, slated for November 14, are expected to shed more light on Schulman's strategic direction. RBC anticipates moderate adjustments, focusing on repositioning rather than immediate financial recovery, projecting second-quarter retail revenue of £405 million.

RBC's price target is based on a DCF model, indicating significant potential for valuation improvement if Burberry meets the expected growth trajectory. With potential acquisition prospects and a steady focus on core products, RBC's "outperform" rating forecasts a speculative yet positive outlook for Burberry's shares going forward.
