India’s Economic Comparison with China

India’s rapid economic growth, alongside China’s economic challenges, raises questions about India’s potential as a global economic powerhouse. Analysts from UBS Global Research noted that:

  • China’s economic recovery has been weak post-pandemic, while India’s has been strong.
  • China faces structural issues, particularly an aging population, while India has a young labor force and favorable external conditions.

Despite India’s demographic advantages, replicating China’s success as a manufacturing hub is unlikely in the short term. In 2023, China held 30% of global manufacturing while India accounted for just 3%. Currently, India’s manufacturing contributes about 13% to its GDP, compared to China’s 32% in 2000. However, India possesses potential for significant growth in manufacturing due to lower labor costs, improving infrastructure, and inviting policies for foreign investment.

India’s domestic market mirrors China’s in size from 2006-2007, and household consumption has doubled in the last decade. UBS predicts India will surpass Japan by 2026 as the world’s third-largest consumer market. With ongoing growth, India’s market size could match China’s before its GDP does.

High-quality job creation will be essential for continuous consumption growth. As the economy expands, demand for durable goods and automobiles is expected to increase, further driving economic development.

China’s capital-intensive growth has heavily influenced global energy and commodities markets, which India is less likely to replicate. India imports substantial oil and coal but will be less energy-intensive in its growth. Its distinct resource dynamics and urbanization may lead to different demands for base metals than China. Thus, while India is projected to grow rapidly, its global commodities impact will likely be limited compared to China.
