Canadian Businesses to Receive Tariff Relief
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Canadian officials announced on Sunday a new mechanism for businesses to obtain relief from retaliatory tariffs against the United States set to take effect soon.
Under the “remission process,” Canadian businesses can apply for tariff relief or refunds if they meet specific conditions.
Eligibility includes:
– Goods that cannot be sourced domestically or reasonably from non-U.S. sources.
– Consideration of relief on a case-by-case basis for exceptional circumstances adversely impacting the Canadian economy.
Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc stated, “We want to preserve this relationship, but in the face of the unjustified U.S. tariffs against Canadian goods, we are taking action to protect our economy, our workers, and our businesses. We will always stand for Canada.”
The announcement of retaliatory tariffs followed President Donald Trump’s introduction of new tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China.
The initial Canadian tariffs, effective Tuesday, will affect $30 billion worth of products, including beverages, cosmetics, and paper products. Additionally, Canada plans to impose tariffs on $125 billion of U.S. products, to be detailed later, covering vehicles, metal, produce, beef, pork, dairy, and more, as per a Department of Finance release.
