Canadian Foreign Minister’s Response to U.S. Tariffs

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly stated on Monday that she would soon be in discussions with counterparts in allied nations to counter tariffs threatened by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Joly informed reporters about her intentions to speak with the foreign ministers of Britain, Mexico, and some members of the 27-nation European Union.

> “We have to be extremely pragmatic when it comes to working with the Europeans and also with Britain on this. President Trump has referred to using tariffs against the world,” Joly remarked after a meeting of a cabinet committee on U.S. relations.

Joly added that discussions are ongoing in many European capitals regarding potential retaliatory measures and alternative responses to the tariffs.

Trump has announced that he is prepared to impose a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada unless Ottawa enhances border security.

Joly emphasized that Canada would respond with countermeasures if tariffs are implemented, and she plans to visit Washington this week for talks with officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
