Coinbase Ventures and a16z Crypto Startup Accelerator Fund Skyfire

Coinbase Ventures and the a16z Crypto Startup Accelerator (CSX) have announced strategic funding for AI payment firm Skyfire.

The new contribution brings Skyfire's total seed funding to $9.5 million, up from $8.5 million in its previous round, announced on August 21. This earlier round included participation from notable firms such as Neuberger Berman, Brevan Howard Digital, Intersection Growth Partners, DRW, Inception Capital, Arrington Capital, RedBeard Ventures, Sfermion, Circle, FBG, Gemini, Crossbeam Venture Partners, EveryRealm, Draper Associates, ARCA, and Ripple.

Skyfire is focused on building infrastructure that enables AI agents to make autonomous payments without human intermediaries. The firm provides AI agents with unique digital wallets, allowing human users to pre-load these wallets with USDC or use traditional banking methods.

AI agents are AI-powered programs capable of performing tasks or answering questions. Craig DeWitt, Skyfire Co-Founder, compared Skyfire's role to that of Visa in the AI economy, stating that such infrastructure is crucial for the success of AI agents. He emphasized that existing payment systems were not designed for the scale and speed of AI transactions, making Skyfire’s approach to verifiable agent identities and USDC transactions transformative.

As of October 22, USDC holds 26.9% of the total Ethereum stablecoin supply, according to The Block's Data Dashboard.
