US Consumer Confidence Soars to Highest Level Since 2021

Investing.com — US consumer confidence surged to its highest level since 2021 in October, surprising some analysts as a robust job market and declining gas prices outweighed usual election-related anxieties.

The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index rose to 108.7 in October, reflecting more favorable views of current conditions and improved expectations for the future, according to Wells Fargo economists in a note released on Tuesday.

This unexpected increase, the highest since March 2021, counters the typical decline in sentiment stemming from election uncertainty in the months leading up to the vote.

The consumer confidence report indicated that election concerns remained secondary to economic worries for consumers.

"In fact, according to the Conference Board, mentions of the word 'election' ranked as the fifth most discussed topic in the October survey," the economists stated. They noted that mentions of the upcoming general election were lower compared to both 2016 and 2020 levels.

Despite ongoing inflationary issues, the economists emphasized that prices and inflation were still the top concerns affecting consumers' economic perceptions.

However, falling gas prices and renewed confidence in the labor market have eased some of these concerns. "Amid slower inflation and improved job prospects, consumer plans for major purchases have broadly increased across all categories," Wells Fargo reported.
