Entrepreneur and Web3 Investor Carl Runefelt’s Philanthropy

Entrepreneur and Web3 investor Carl Runefelt, known as Carl Moon on social media, recently donated over $400,000 in cryptocurrency to the nonprofit Kids Operating Room (KidsOR). This organization focuses on providing surgical care for children in underserved regions.

Runefelt also encouraged KidsOR to accept cryptocurrency donations, which could attract a new wave of global donors. Garreth Wood, co-founder and chairman of KidsOR, stated that Runefelt’s donation was a “game changer”.

> “It wasn’t just a generous gift. It showed us that new ways of fundraising could bring together a community of people who want to use innovation to help children across the globe,” Wood said.

KidsOR now accepts crypto donations via their JustGiving platform, making it easier for supporters to help provide surgeries for children worldwide.

Impact of Cryptocurrency on Lives

Runefelt sees his wealth from cryptocurrency as a responsibility to help others. His donation will fund an operating theater and recovery room in Tanzania and a children’s hospital in Zimbabwe.

> “Whenever we make life-changing money, we should remember that it can be life-changing not only for us, but for thousands of children around the world,” he said.

His philanthropic mission is deeply personal; his younger brother, born with Down syndrome, has undergone more than 60 surgeries.

> “If my little brother hadn’t gotten surgery, he wouldn’t be here today,” Runefelt shared, urging crypto users to assist children who lack access to necessary medical care.

> “Around the world, children are in desperate need of help. I want to do my part, and I hope to inspire others to do the same,” he added.

The Shift Towards Crypto Donations

Since 2014, KidsOR has established over 100 pediatric operating rooms in 35 countries, facilitating more than 726,000 surgeries.

> “Every operating room we build has a huge impact,” Wood remarked. “With more support, we can go from helping hundreds of thousands of children to millions.”

He acknowledged that while accepting crypto donations can be complex, Runefelt’s contribution demonstrated the feasibility and benefits of this approach. This transparency allows donors to directly see their impact, fostering accountability and a strong connection between them and the children they help.

Wood highlighted that crypto and Web3 values support global health equity, ensuring everyone has access to healthcare.

> “Decentralization and borderless access can unlock resources and opportunities for children everywhere, and philanthropy is the bridge that makes this vision a reality,” Wood said.

Crypto Philanthropy Surges

In 2024 alone, crypto donations surpassed $1 billion, demonstrating the ongoing growth of crypto philanthropy. According to reports from The Giving Block, more than 70% of top US-based charities began accepting cryptocurrency donations this year.
