Indiana Man Pleads Guilty to Cyber Intrusion and Cryptocurrency Theft
An Indiana man has pleaded guilty to cyber intrusion and stealing cryptocurrency worth over $37 million from nearly 600 victims, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Twenty-one-year-old Evan Light from Lebanon, Indiana, entered his guilty plea on Monday to charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to launder monetary instruments.
In February 2022, Light was involved in a cyber intrusion at an investment holdings company located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Court documents reveal that he stole personal information and subsequently robbed hundreds of victims.
Light was reportedly aided by “one or more unidentified” accomplices. The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
According to the statement, the stolen cryptocurrency under Light’s control was funneled to various locations worldwide, utilizing multiple mixing services and gambling websites to obscure his identity and conceal the virtual currency.
Light faces a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in custody for each count to which he pleaded guilty.
