Akord, a Web3 platform for secure data management, begins its migration to Walrus Protocol.
Mysten Labs, a Web3 infrastructure company, today announced the public Testnet launch of Walrus Protocol, a decentralized storage network, following a successful Devnet.
Walrus Protocol efficiently stores and delivers large data files, such as rich media content, audio files, videos, images, PDFs, and more from any web2 or web3-based source. These large files, referred to as blobs, are stored securely, quickly, and resiliently. Walrus’s Testnet, aided by Sui as the coordination layer, offers speedy consensus and integration opportunities with smart contracts on Sui. The Testnet launch includes:
- API endpoints that support deletable blobs.
- A dedicated Walrus explorer, built by Stakestab Inc, for comprehensive data searches.
- A full tokenomics ecosystem for the Walrus token (WAL), including staking, unstaking, and rewards, along with a WAL token faucet for developers.
- A WAL staking app developed by Mysten Labs.
George Danezis, Chief Scientist and Co-Founder at Mysten Labs, stated, “The launch of Walrus Testnet is a pivotal moment as it addresses the need for decentralized storage for various blockchain projects.” Akord and Decrypt Media are beginning their migration to Walrus, indicating its potential in serving mass applications.
“Akord's mission revolves around giving individuals and organizations meaningful data ownership and secure storage options,” said Pascal Barry, CEO of Akord. “Migrating to Walrus allows us to provide a more versatile and cost-effective solution.”
Walrus divides large files into smaller fragments, named ‘Red Stuff,’ which are distributed across multiple storage nodes. This design enables the reconstruction of data even if some fragments are lost, reducing redundancy and enhancing accessibility. Walrus incentivizes nodes to store these file slivers, lowering verification costs by assessing entire storage nodes instead of individual files.
Originally contributed by Mysten Labs, Walrus started on Devnet in June 2024, with its whitepaper released in September 2024. The Mainnet launch is anticipated in 2025.
