(Reuters) – Defense technology company Anduril Industries and ChatGPT-maker OpenAI announced a partnership on Wednesday to develop and deploy advanced artificial intelligence solutions for national security missions.

The focus will be on enhancing the United States' counter-unmanned aircraft systems (CUAS), improving their ability to detect, assess, and respond to potentially lethal aerial threats in real-time.

The CUAS is designed to help defend against drone strikes by detecting and intercepting them while airborne. The AI models will be trained on Anduril's extensive data library of CUAS threats and operations.

Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, stated, "Our partnership with Anduril will help ensure OpenAI technology protects U.S. military personnel."

This partnership arises amid a competitive race among the U.S., its allies, and China to develop AI-controlled weapons capable of autonomous operations, including warships and fighter jets.

Founded in 2017, Anduril develops and fields integrated autonomous solutions using a variety of sensors, including drones, effectors, and assets, and has experience in automating the operations of robotic systems in tactical environments.
