Elon Musk Criticizes UK Government’s Actions

LONDON (Reuters) – Elon Musk responded to reports that he was not invited to the UK’s upcoming investment summit, alleging that the government was releasing convicted paedophiles while imprisoning people over social media posts.

The BBC reported on Musk’s absence from the summit next month after Musk made remarks on his X platform about violent, racist anti-immigration riots in Britain last month.

Britain’s Department for Business and Trade and the Treasury did not comment on the BBC report or Musk’s response.

Musk stated, “I don’t think anyone should go to the UK when they’re releasing convicted pedophiles in order to imprison people for social media posts,” in reaction to the BBC report on X.

Over 1,700 prisoners were released earlier this month as part of a plan by Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour government to manage prison overcrowding in England and Wales; those serving sentences for sex offences were not included in this release.

The government criticized Musk for his August posts, where he claimed that civil war was “inevitable” amid riots involving far-right groups attacking hotels housing asylum seekers and mosques.

Starmer’s spokesperson noted there was “no justification” for Musk’s comments. Over 1,000 arrests have taken place related to the riots, and certain individuals have been jailed for inciting racial hatred online.

The investment summit next month aims to attract global tech and financial leaders, including BNY Mellon (NYSE:BK) and Blackstone (NYSE:BX), to boost the economy.

Musk last met with French President Emmanuel Macron in May during the “Choose France” summit and was last seen publicly in London in November when he attended the AI Safety Summit and interviewed by former Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
