EU Commission Requests Information from Social Media Platforms
PARIS (Reuters) – The EU Commission requested information on Wednesday from YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok regarding the parameters used by their algorithms to recommend content. The request aims to understand their role in amplifying systemic risks related to the electoral process, mental health, and protection of minors.
The requests were made under the Digital Services Act (DSA), which also concerns the platforms’ measures to mitigate the influence of their recommender systems on the spread of illegal content, including the promotion of illegal drugs and hate speech.
The Commission specifically requested additional information from TikTok about measures it has adopted to prevent manipulation by bad actors and to reduce risks associated with elections and civic discourse.
The tech firms must provide the requested information by November 15. Following this, the Commission will decide on next steps, which may include fines.
Previously, the EU has initiated non-compliance proceedings under the DSA against Meta’s Facebook, Instagram, AliExpress, and TikTok for failing to address illegal and harmful content adequately.
