WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris outlined part of her agenda during her Democratic National Convention speech. She promised a middle-class tax cut, support for Ukraine and NATO, and a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict.
Policy Proposals
Israel Defense, Gaza Ceasefire
Harris emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire and a hostage release in Gaza. While supporting Israel’s right to defend itself, she also acknowledged the Palestinians’ right to self-determination.
“I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself,” Harris stated, while expressing her concern for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The violence escalated following Hamas’ attack on October 7, resulting in significant casualties and displacement. Harris remarked on the heartbreaking suffering in Gaza, proposing that President Biden and she are working towards a resolution that ensures security for Israel, the release of hostages, and basic rights for the Palestinian people.
Support for Ukraine and NATO
Harris reaffirmed her commitment to Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia and to NATO unity:
“As President, I will stand strong with Ukraine and our NATO allies.”
She contrasted her stance with former President Trump’s, accusing him of undermining NATO and cozying up to autocrats like Kim Jong Un.
Middle Class Tax Cut
Harris proposed a middle-class tax cut if elected, stating:
“Instead of the Trump tax hike, we will pass a middle-class tax cut that will benefit more than 100 million Americans.”
In her speech, Harris also discussed plans to cut taxes for most Americans, ban price gouging by grocers, and increase affordable housing. However, she may face resistance from corporations and Congress, which has previously rejected similar initiatives from President Biden.
