U.S. Federal Reserve’s Stance on Policy Rates

(Reuters) – U.S. Federal Reserve Vice Chair Philip Jefferson stated on Wednesday that he is satisfied with keeping the central bank’s policy rate unchanged. This decision will remain until policymakers gain a clearer understanding of how the Trump administration’s policies on tariffs, immigration, deregulation, and taxes have affected the economy.

Jefferson addressed students at Swarthmore College and noted that even after 100 basis points of rate cuts in late 2024, Fed policy will stay restrictive, continuing to apply downward pressure on inflation.

“We can be patient and wait to see the net effect of any policy changes by the current administration,” he remarked.
