Kashkari's Outlook on Rate Cuts
Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari stated on Monday that he anticipates modest rate cuts over the coming quarters. However, he noted that evidence of a more rapid slowdown in the labor market could prompt quicker reductions.
Kashkari mentioned, "Right now I see modest cuts over the next quarters," and minimized the likelihood that changes in trade policies, such as tariffs, would have a long-term effect on inflation. He explained, "Tariffs shouldn't be themselves leading to ongoing inflation; probably a one-time change in price level."
He also discussed the implications of potential immigration policy changes on the labor market, acknowledging that such changes could influence perceptions of labor market conditions. Overall, Kashkari reinforced the Fed's position that any modifications to monetary policy will be dependent on forthcoming economic data.
