Federal Reserve Policy Meeting Insight

Investing.com — The Federal Reserve is set for its first policy meeting next week, but BofA believes the meeting is likely to be a minimal event as the central bank is expected to keep rates unchanged.

BofA analysts view the January Fed meeting as mostly a placeholder, stating, “We view the January Fed meeting as mostly a placeholder. The Fed will most likely stay on hold.”

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is scheduled to meet on January 28-29. This meeting follows a hawkish rate cut in December, wherein the committee reduced rates by 0.25% but also limited its future rate cut projections from four to just two for 2025.

According to BofA, recent economic data, particularly the stabilization of the labor market near full employment, has corroborated forecasts for fewer rate cuts in the future.

Although a rate cut is not anticipated in January, the Fed may revise its labor market outlook in its monetary policy statement.

During the post-decision press conference, Fed Chair Powell is likely to lay groundwork ensuring maximum flexibility for the March policy decision, as suggested by analysts.

With market participants anticipating “virtually no odds of a policy adjustment at this meeting,” BofA states, “investors are more focused on Trump policy changes and their economic impact versus the Fed right now.”

Additionally, BofA notes that guidance on the Fed’s balance sheet outlook is of interest, although they acknowledge that expectations are “low given stable funding markets and little Fed focus on the issue.”
