German Chancellor Scholz Criticizes Musk’s Extremist Views

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated on Tuesday that he does not support freedom of speech when it promotes extreme-right views. This comment follows a controversial hand gesture by U.S. billionaire Elon Musk during Donald Trump’s inauguration celebrations.

Scholz remarked, “We have the freedom of speech in Europe and in Germany. Everyone can say what he wants, even if he is a billionaire. And what we do not accept is if this is supporting extreme-right positions.” The Chancellor made this statement in Davos when questioned about Musk’s actions.

Musk’s gesture during the celebration was likened to a Nazi salute online, which he dismissed as a “tired” attack. Following Scholz’s comments, Musk posted on X (the platform he owns), “Shame on Oaf Schitz” along with a video showing Scholz speaking at the World Economic Forum meeting.

The term “Schitz” has no meaning in German. Musk has previously criticized Scholz on X, labeling him an “incompetent fool” after a deadly attack at a German Christmas market.

Additionally, Musk has expressed support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which aligns closely with Trump’s views in Germany. His endorsements have faced backlash in Berlin, yet the German government has not completely distanced itself from his platform.

Furthermore, the European Commission is intensifying its investigation into whether X has violated EU content moderation rules. The Commission has been monitoring Musk’s recent discussions on X with AfD leader Alice Weidel for potential misinformation dissemination.
