Gilead Sciences Appoints Dietmar Berger as Chief Medical Officer

(Reuters) – Gilead Sciences announced on Thursday that it has appointed Dietmar Berger, formerly of Sanofi, as its Chief Medical Officer, replacing Merdad Parsey, who will leave early next year.

Berger, set to join on January 2, previously served as Sanofi's Chief Medical Officer and was the global head of development, overseeing development science, strategy, and operations across the company's therapeutic areas.

This transition comes as Gilead intensifies its focus on cancer treatments and inflammatory disease drugs. Gilead's CEO, Daniel O'Day, highlighted Berger's exceptional leadership in global drug development and his impressive track record in delivering transformative therapies.

In his new role, Berger will manage Gilead's virology, oncology, and inflammation portfolios, in addition to overseeing global development and medical affairs. He has previously held senior development positions at Bayer and Amgen, among others.
