German-U.S. Relations Under Trump: Scholz’s Views
DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) – Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed cautious optimism on Tuesday regarding the future of German-U.S. relations under President Donald Trump. He noted positive initial discussions with his administration while emphasizing the need for “cool heads” amid ongoing uncertainties.
>The United States is our closest ally outside Europe. And I will do everything in my power to ensure that it stays that way,
>Scholz stated during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
He mentioned that his initial conversations with President Trump and the interactions between their advisors are promising.
On Trump’s first full day in office, Scholz reiterated that collaboration between Europe and the U.S. is crucial for global peace, security, and economic development. Nonetheless, he stressed the importance of Europe becoming more self-reliant.
Germany’s ambassador to Washington has internally cautioned about potentially turbulent relations under Trump, as German companies raised concerns over possible tariffs from the new U.S. administration.
>In a world that is constantly on the verge of a nervous breakdown when viewed through the prism of social media, cool heads are needed,
>Scholz affirmed, adding that not every press conference in Washington or tweet should provoke intense debates.
Despite his concerns, Scholz anticipates that Trump will keep global attention focused, particularly regarding energy, climate policy, trade, and foreign relations.
