Economists Anticipate Continued High Inflation in the Eurozone
(Reuters) – Economists expect inflation rates to remain above the European Central Bank's (ECB) 2% target in the medium term, according to a survey published by Germany's Ifo institute on Wednesday, just before the ECB's upcoming monetary policy meeting.
In the eurozone, economists project inflation will reach 2.6% this year, based on the quarterly survey conducted by Ifo and the Swiss Economic Policy Institute.
- Germany: 2.4%
- Austria: 3.1%
- France: 2.3%
Ifo researcher Niklas Potrafke noted, "Inflation is also expected to exceed the ECB's target of 2% in the medium term," explaining that stagnating inflation expectations may lead central banks to hold off on further interest rate cuts.
Despite these predictions, the ECB is anticipated to implement a further interest rate cut this week, as ECB chief Christine Lagarde indicated that confidence in declining inflation will influence the bank's decision.
