Ireland’s Manufacturing Sector Shows Modest Growth

DUBLIN (Reuters) – Ireland’s manufacturing sector recorded growth for the second time in eight months in July, recovering from a contraction at the fastest pace in a year the previous month, according to a survey released on Thursday.

The AIB S&P Global manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for Ireland increased to 50.1 from 47.4 in June, crossing the crucial 50 mark that indicates a shift from contraction to growth, which manufacturers have only achieved four times since February 2023.

The modest growth was fueled by a renewed rise in output following a significant decline in June. This boost in output has instilled confidence in companies, prompting them to enhance their staffing levels.

However, the survey’s authors indicated that while the preliminary data showed early signs of recovering demand conditions, companies struggled to rejuvenate their purchasing activities amid rising costs, which could pose potential challenges.

Input prices, which had been declining this time last year following a significant increase the year before, surged at the fastest rate in 17 months in June.

The survey’s authors noted, “While stronger cost burdens failed to fully translate into charges, they will need to be monitored closely to assess inflationary concerns.”
