Italian Government and Stellantis Cooperation
ROME (Reuters) – The Italian government is willing to collaborate with Stellantis NV (NYSE:STLA) on the company's future strategy, provided that it retains jobs and factories in Italy, stated Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Sunday.
Meloni emphasized the need to evaluate economic cases individually, during her address at a Brothers of Italy party event in Rome. This comes ahead of a pivotal meeting on the Italian automotive industry scheduled for December 17, which will include Industry Minister Adolfo Urso, representatives from the automaker, and local unions.
"This is as true for Stellantis as it is for any other company operating in Italy. If the approach is constructive, and if there is a willingness to maintain factories and jobs, we will be ready to do our part," Meloni stated.
Following the abrupt resignation of Carlos Tavares as CEO this month, Rome aims to mend its previously strained relations with Stellantis, which encompasses 14 brands, including Jeep, Ram, Fiat (BIT:STLAM), and Peugeot (OTC:PUGOY).
Italian politicians have often criticized Tavares for neglecting historic manufacturing sites and shifting production abroad.
