Kremlin Supports Scholz’s Call for Nord Stream Investigation

MOSCOW (Reuters) – The Kremlin stated on Monday that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is correct in advocating for a thorough investigation into the 2022 attack on the Nord Stream gas pipelines. This statement comes amid claims from Moscow about attempts by some Western nations to suppress the truth about the incident.

In an interview with German television over the weekend, Scholz emphasized that Berlin’s investigation aims to ensure transparency and accountability for those responsible for the blasts.

Moscow has expressed frustration over Germany’s perceived lack of action regarding the explosions that damaged the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in September 2022, designed to transport Russian gas to Europe.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov welcomed Scholz’s recent comments, stating, “We absolutely agree that the terrorist attack, the sabotage of the Nord Streams must be thoroughly investigated, despite the desperate attempts of some states involved in this story to hush it up.”

He underscored that a cover-up should not be tolerated.

No group has claimed responsibility for the blasts, which occurred seven months post Russia’s military action in Ukraine. Moscow, without providing evidence, has accused the United States and Britain of carrying out the attack, allegations both countries have denied.

Last month, German prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for a Ukrainian diving instructor linked to the attacks. Polish authorities confirmed receipt of the warrant but noted that the suspect had already left Poland, as his name was not included in the wanted persons database.

Additionally, when asked about Scholz’s proposals for a Ukraine peace plan, Peskov remarked that Moscow was unaware of the specifics.
