OPEC Lowers Global Oil Demand Growth Forecasts
OPEC has revised its global oil demand growth forecasts for 2024 and 2025 due to slower economic growth in key markets, particularly China and India.
Demand Forecasts
The group now anticipates an increase of 1.6 million barrels per day (bpd) in global oil demand for 2024, a reduction of 210,000 bpd from previous estimates. For 2025, the forecast shows growth of 1.4 million bpd, down by 90,000 bpd.
Supply Trends
Conversely, non-OPEC countries, especially the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Norway, are expected to boost production, possibly influencing oil prices.
Economic Growth Projections
OPEC maintained its global economic growth forecast at 3.1% for 2024 and 3.0% for 2025. The outlook for the United States has been slightly improved, with anticipated growth of 2.8% in 2024 and 2.2% in 2025, aided by robust expansion in the latter half of 2024.
China’s growth estimates remain stable at 4.9% for 2024 and 4.7% for 2025, while India maintains a growth outlook of 6.8% for 2024 and 6.3% for 2025.
Conclusion
The downward revisions in demand forecasts arise from inconsistent global economic growth and ongoing discussions about energy transition. The increasing supply from non-OPEC producers may lead to significant changes in market dynamics, impacting oil prices in the future.
