OpenAI to Air First TV Commercial During Super Bowl

(Reuters) – OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is set to launch its first television commercial during the upcoming Super Bowl, as reported by the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday from sources familiar with the situation.

The Super Bowl is considered one of the most significant televised events for advertisers, attracting a massive audience and emphasizing creative advertisement, which can create substantial buzz among viewers.

This will mark OpenAI’s initial venture into commercial advertising. Competitors like Google promoted their AI capabilities through advertisements at last year’s Super Bowl.

OpenAI has not responded to requests for comment from Reuters.

The cost for a 30-second advertisement slot in the 2025 Super Bowl has reached approximately $8 million, as stated by Adweek’s Chief Content Officer, Zoe Ruderman, an increase from around $7 million for a similar ad spot on CBS last year.

The 2024 Super Bowl attracted about 210 million viewers. The next edition, the 59th Super Bowl, is scheduled for February 9 at 6:30 p.m. ET (2330 GMT), taking place in New Orleans at the Caesars Superdome, which has a seating capacity of 83,000.

OpenAI, co-owned by Microsoft, launched ChatGPT in late 2022 and achieved over 300 million weekly active users within two years. The company, valued at $300 billion, is rumored to be in talks to raise up to $40 billion and appointed its first Chief Marketing Officer, Kate Rouch, in December last year.
