U.S. Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, recently revealed he has received over $261,000 in campaign contributions. This week, he announced that his campaign now accepts bitcoin as a form of support.
Bitcoin and Budget Battles
Thomas Massie, the Kentucky lawmaker who recently re-tabled a bill aimed at dismantling the U.S. Federal Reserve, is currently engaged in a political clash with President Trump. The President has pledged to support a primary challenger against Massie due to his opposition to the Continuing Resolution (CR).
At its core, a CR is a congressional mechanism that provides temporary financial support to the federal government when the standard appropriations procedure is not complete. Massie, a fierce critic of unchecked government spending, sports an electronic U.S. debt clock on his suit lapel as a symbol of his fiscal principles.
He opposes the CR, arguing that it continues funding at previous levels without enacting desired reforms like border security measures and Pentagon policy adjustments. He prefers individual bills to be voted on separately rather than being bundled into one package.
Along with Massie, Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is also voting against the CR. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has expressed her opposition to the GOP-supported CR, criticizing its provisions that cut domestic initiatives.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has denounced the CR as a departure from Democratic principles, urging Senate Democrats to resist its passage. Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has endorsed the bill to prevent a government shutdown.
Trump’s contention with Massie has caused a split between libertarians and staunch MAGA supporters, as many libertarians think Republicans should reconsider condemning Massie. Massie’s campaign has attracted over $261,000 in donations and he recently announced he would accept bitcoin (BTC) donations.
Massie’s website utilizes the BTC payment infrastructure from Opennode, founded in 2018 and based in Los Angeles, California. Massie joins several Republicans who are open to BTC contributions, while Trump also embraced the leading cryptocurrency during his 2024 campaign.
Although the crypto sector tends to support Republicans, it has also backed Democrats. Fairshake invested $3 million each in backing Democratic Senate candidates Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) and Elisa Slotkin (D-Mich.), both of whom voted in favor of pro-crypto legislation.
