Sally Buzbee Joins Reuters as News Editor for U.S. and Canada

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Sally Buzbee, who recently served as the executive editor of the Washington Post, is set to join Reuters as the News Editor for the United States and Canada. She will oversee coverage related to a potential second Donald Trump presidency and other important news areas.

Buzbee, 59, succeeds Kieran Murray, who will transition to a new role as the top editor of the company’s live events business. Murray managed Reuters’ Washington bureau for the past eight years and handled U.S. and Canadian operations for the last five.

Before her tenure at the Washington Post, Buzbee held the position of executive editor and senior vice president at the Associated Press. She will begin her new role on December 11, following her departure from the Post in June, which was prompted by a reorganization led by the paper’s new CEO, William Lewis.

Reuters Editor-in-Chief Alessandra Galloni expressed her enthusiasm: “I have admired Sally for years, and I am so excited that she will be joining the Reuters family in this key role. Her journalistic skills, management experience, global insight, and pragmatic approach are exactly what we need in these turbulent times for the world and the news industry.”

In her new position, Buzbee will be at the forefront of Reuters’ U.S. political coverage, particularly after a presidential election where Trump bypassed traditional media to connect with voters through podcasts and online personalities.

Buzbee’s appointment aligns with Reuters’ efforts to expand its consumer offerings, including a new subscription-based website, newsletters, and podcasts. At the Washington Post, she became the first woman to lead the newsroom in 2021 and oversaw coverage that garnered multiple Pulitzer Prizes, including awards for reporting on the January 6 U.S. Capitol attack and mass shootings.

During her tenure as the AP’s top editor from 2017 to 2021, the agency also received several Pulitzers for its international reporting and photography.

Reuters is the news division of Toronto-based content and technology company Thomson Reuters (NYSE:TRI).
