Stablecoins are currently in the spotlight due to the newly signed GENIUS Act, which establishes a regulatory framework for dollar-backed stablecoins and aims to strengthen the U.S. role in the evolving global cryptocurrency landscape.

The new law mandates that stablecoins be backed by liquid assets like U.S. dollars and short-term Treasury bills, requiring issuers to regularly disclose the composition of their reserves.

Stablecoins are designed to maintain a steady value, typically pegged at 1:1 with the U.S. dollar, and their usage has increased, especially among crypto traders moving funds between tokens. The industry anticipates wider adoption for sending and receiving payments.

Stablecoins See Increased Optimism

The newly signed GENIUS Act has spurred optimism in the stablecoin sector, including RLUSD.

According to CoinMarketCap, the stablecoin market is valued at over $264 billion, with predictions it could reach $2 trillion by 2028 under this new law, as forecasted by Standard Chartered Bank this year.

SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce stated that the new GENIUS law affirms that payment stablecoins are not securities, marking a critical milestone in achieving regulatory clarity for crypto—an essential requirement for fostering market innovation.

In the past week, Ripple announced the Bank of New York Mellon as the primary custodian for the RLUSD stablecoin reserves. This move is seen as enhancing regulatory compliance for Ripple, the issuer of RLUSD, as well as boosting institutional credibility for the company and the rapidly growing stablecoin industry.
