Romania's Upcoming Elections

BUCHAREST (Reuters) – Romania's ruling leftist Social Democrats (PSD) are projected to lead in the parliamentary election on December 1. A recent survey indicated that the far-right opposition party, Alliance for Uniting Romanians (AUR), has overtaken the centre-right Liberals, now ranking second.

Romanians will participate in a two-round presidential contest on November 24 and December 8, with the parliamentary election occurring in between on December 1.

The survey, conducted by pollster INSCOP for Libertatea, revealed that 30.2% of voters support the Social Democrat Party (PSD), while only 13.2% would vote for their coalition partner, the centre-right Liberals. The far-right AUR, opposing military aid for Ukraine, is projected to receive 21.4% of votes.

Opposition centre-right party Save Romania Union (USR) is expected to gain 12.7% of the votes. The poll was conducted from October 11-18 and has a margin of error of 3.2%.

Previously, Social Democrats and Liberals formed a grand coalition government in late 2021 and combined efforts in the June European Parliament election, receiving 48.6% of the votes. In local polls held the same day, the Social Democrats garnered 37.6% while the Liberals followed with 32.3%.

Tensions within the coalition have increased as both party leaders are presidential candidates, with Social Democrat Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu likely advancing to the second round. A controversial ruling barring a far-right politician from running has also intensified frustrations.

Originally, the parties were expected to maintain their coalition post-elections; however, Ciolacu has dismissed the possibility of collaborating with AUR.

The incoming government will face the challenge of addressing Romania's significant budget deficit and implementing reforms necessary to secure vital EU recovery funds.

Another survey by pollster CURS earlier this month also suggested the PSD would win 31% in the upcoming parliamentary election, followed by the Liberals at 20%, AUR at 18%, and USR at 15%.
