World Launches Human Verification Program in Brazil
Sam Altman's project, formerly known as Worldcoin, announced on Tuesday the launch of its human verification program in Brazil.
"World ID verification is now available in Brazil," the project posted on X.
About the Project
Tools For Humanity, co-founded by Alex Blania and Sam Altman, is the lead developer behind the project, of which Altman is also the CEO of OpenAI.
Brazil is a strategic location for World as it aims to increase signups, boasting a crypto-friendly environment and a population exceeding 215 million, according to 2023 World Bank data.
The project stated that 93% of Brazilians have experienced identity theft or know someone affected by it.
Global Reach
World has verified over 7.5 million World IDs across more than 160 countries, an increase of about one million since September.
Vision
World aims to assign digital identifications to every person on the planet. Users receive WLD crypto tokens for signing up, verified through eyeball scanning to prove humanity. This initiative addresses the rise of AI-driven actors, emphasizing the need for a system to distinguish humans from non-humans.
"AI is creating opportunities for scambots, deep fakes, identity theft, and more online. Bad bots comprise nearly a third of all internet traffic, and they may soon outnumber humans," said World in a statement.
Privacy Concerns
While the project has faced scrutiny and bans in some countries over privacy issues, World assures that it does not store biometric data after verification and issuance of IDs.
