South African Business Confidence in January 2024

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – South African business confidence stabilized in January, according to data released on Wednesday. After a surge in the second half of 2024, optimism surrounding the country’s economic prospects under the ruling coalition government contributed to this stability.

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Business Confidence Index stood at 120.0 in January, slightly down from 121.0 in December, but significantly higher than 118.1 in November.

SACCI noted that the index experienced a decline in January due to lower export volumes. However, increased imports, vehicle sales, and a rise in tourist numbers positively impacted the index.

New policies implemented by the coalition government formed in June last year have led to a general improvement in South African business sentiment, according to the chamber.

Despite this positive trend, the chamber expressed caution regarding the uncertainty stemming from the new administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. Last week, Trump signed an executive order that reduced U.S. financial aid to South Africa due to its land policy and a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

South Africa responded by stating that the executive order “lacks factual accuracy and fails to recognize South Africa’s profound and painful history of colonialism and apartheid.”
