South Korea’s top trade negotiator announced plans to discuss concerns regarding potential U.S. restrictions on chipmakers in China during his upcoming meetings in Washington this week.

Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo expressed the importance of addressing industry worries about U.S. policies that could hinder foreign chipmakers’ operations in China. Before leaving for Washington, he emphasized, “I will pass on the concerns among those in the industry and take utmost care.”

Yeo suggested that South Korea may not adhere strictly to the July deadline for trade discussions, hinting at the possibility of extending talks beyond July 8 due to prevailing political and economic uncertainties in the U.S.

Currently, South Korea faces a blanket 10% tariff, while a 25% country-specific duty is paused for 90 days. In their initial trade discussions held in late April, both nations agreed to work towards a trade deal aimed at tariff reductions by July 8.

Having recently assumed office, Trade Minister Yeo was appointed by President Lee Jae Myung, who advocated for a measured approach to trade agreements during his campaign. Yeo also mentioned his intent to engage with White House and Congress officials to touch on various trade topics, including U.S. requests for more lenient import regulations on U.S. beef.
