Economic Talks Between the U.S. and EU

MADRID (Reuters) – Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo expressed optimism on Tuesday about the potential for a fair trade deal between the United States and the European Union after his meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Washington.

Cuerpo noted that Bessent conveyed a “clear message” reaffirming the “open door to negotiation” initiated last week with a 90-day moratorium on tariff increases.

Importance of Trade Relations

The U.S. is the EU’s largest trading partner for exports, with daily trans-Atlantic trade flows valued at approximately 4.4 billion euros ($5.1 billion).

These trade relations faced strain earlier this month when U.S. President Donald Trump imposed reciprocal tariffs of 20% on the EU, in addition to existing 25% tariffs on steel, aluminum, and car imports.

Recent Context

Last week, Trump unexpectedly paused most tariffs on global trading partners for 90 days, reducing duty rates on goods from various countries to facilitate negotiations for lower trade barriers.

During Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s visit to China, Bessent warned that closer ties with the Asian nation could be detrimental, a claim dismissed by Spanish officials.

Key Quotes

Cuerpo stated, “We’re convinced that, with (EU Trade) Commissioner (Maros) Sefcovic leading the European negotiation, we’ll be able to reach an agreement that is balanced, fair and beneficial to both sides.”

After his “very constructive and very useful” meeting with Bessent, Cuerpo remarked that they engaged in an “open and frank conversation” on various aspects of the international economy, including U.S.-Spain relations and interactions between the EU and major economic entities like China.
