Telegram CEO Pavel Durov Denounces Arrest and Market Compatibility
Telegram CEO Pavel Durov recently addressed his arrest via the messaging app, expressing his readiness to exit markets incompatible with his principles.
“Sometimes we can’t agree with a country’s regulator on the right balance between privacy and security. In those cases, we are ready to leave that country. We’ve done it many times,” Durov stated, referencing Russia and Iran.
He emphasized Telegram’s commitment to defending basic human rights, particularly where they are under threat, saying, “We are driven by the intention to bring good and defend the basic rights of people.”
Durov was arrested at a Paris airport and later indicted by a French court on serious charges related to cybercrime, including child exploitation and drug trafficking facilitated through Telegram. His arrest is part of a larger investigation into Telegram’s involvement in cybercrime activities, including money laundering and child pornography due to its cryptographic capabilities.
Despite these challenges, Durov was released under judicial supervision, which mandates that he remains in France. Telegram has reportedly amassed $400 million in digital assets as of 2023, with Durov claiming the company is valued at a minimum of $30 billion.
