Thailand’s New Government

BANGKOK (Reuters) – Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced on Saturday that her new government will aim to stimulate the economy immediately and will continue the policies of former premier Srettha Thavisin.

She held a special cabinet meeting earlier to prepare for a 2-day parliamentary meeting on Thursday and Friday, which will mark the formal beginning of her administration.

Paetongtarn was elected prime minister by the House of Representatives last month, following the abrupt removal of Srettha by a court over ethical violations.

Her government will mainly maintain her predecessor’s policies with some adjustments, addressing issues like debt restructuring, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, and boosting the agricultural and tourism sectors.

“Our work will continue from Srettha’s government, particularly in stimulating the economy,” stated Paetongtarn at her first press conference since her cabinet was sworn in by King Maha Vajiralongkorn.

She did not address inquiries regarding adjustments to the government’s flagship digital wallet scheme, which proposes that 50 million Thais receive 10,000 baht ($295) via a smartphone application.

Paetongtarn mentioned that part of the government’s 450 billion baht ($13.4 billion) handout plan would be distributed in cash, indicating possible adjustments to the wallet scheme, though she provided no details.

The youngest daughter of former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, Paetongtarn has not previously served in government and will face challenges, from a struggling economy to potential legal issues similar to those that led to Srettha’s dismissal.

She is the fourth family member to hold the premiership, following three who were removed by coups or court decisions.
