Reddit Considers Eye-Scan User Verification

Reddit, one of the largest social media platforms, may implement new user verification processes.

It has been reported that the company is considering adopting the eye-scan-based World ID system developed by Tools for Humanity, co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. This system is also associated with the World (WLD) altcoin.

Ongoing discussions between Reddit and Tools for Humanity could enable users to maintain their anonymity while confirming they are human. These talks have gained traction due to the rise of AI-generated fake content and new age-verification laws affecting social media in various countries.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman mentioned last month that, given the threats posed by AI and age verification regulations, the platform needs to ensure that users are human and of an appropriate age. Huffman stated that Reddit aims to work with third-party providers to avoid collecting user data, stating: “We will work to preserve both the humanity and anonymity of Reddit.”

The World ID system generates unique biometric data from the user’s iris, which is fragmented and stored on secure servers worldwide. This allows users to verify their individuality without disclosing their identity. The verification process utilizes a World ID stored securely on the user’s phone, rewarding them with WLD tokens.
