Trudeau Responds to Trump’s Remarks on Canada

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau commented on Wednesday regarding U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s suggestion about possibly annexing Canada. He suggested that Trump’s remarks were a distraction from the repercussions of his proposed tariffs.

Trump is proposing a 25% tariff on all Canadian imports unless Canada enhances border security. Trudeau interpreted Trump’s comments as a strategic negotiation tactic, aimed at diverting attention from serious economic issues.

“What I think is happening in this is President Trump, who is a very skillful negotiator, is getting people to be somewhat distracted by that conversation,” Trudeau said during an interview with CNN.

Trudeau illustrated the potential impact of these tariffs, emphasizing that essential goods like oil, gas, electricity, and various materials would become significantly more expensive for American consumers if the tariffs were enacted.

Furthermore, Trudeau dismissed any notion of Canada merging with the U.S., stating there was not “a snowball’s chance in hell” of that occurring. He assured CNN that Canada would retaliate with countermeasures if Trump pursued his threats.

Recalling a previous trade dispute from 2018, Trudeau mentioned that Canada implemented tariffs on products such as Heinz ketchup and Harley Davidson motorcycles, aiming to affect American workers. However, he expressed a desire to avoid such retaliatory measures as they can lead to increased costs for Canadians and negatively impact Canada’s closest trading ally.
