U.S. Airlines Gear Up for Busiest Labor Day Weekend

(Reuters) – U.S. airlines and airports are preparing for the busiest Labor Day weekend as a record number of travelers get ready to jet off for one last summer trip before the season ends.

The summer travel season, historically one of the busiest for airlines and airports, has seen strong passenger volumes despite challenging weather conditions, including unprecedented heatwaves and hurricanes.

The Labor Day weekend from Thursday, Aug. 29 to Wednesday, Sept. 4, is expected to witness 17 million people going through airport security, the highest number recorded for this travel period, according to the Transport Security Administration (TSA), which oversees U.S. transportation systems.

The TSA anticipates an 8.5% increase in passenger volumes over the weekend compared to last year. It has already screened 239.8 million people since Memorial Day weekend in May, averaging 2.7 million per day.

“People are traveling more than ever this summer, and TSA, along with our airline and airport partners, stand ready to close out the busiest summer travel period on record this upcoming Labor Day weekend,” stated TSA Administrator David Pekoske.

Labor Day is particularly popular among families, marking the final extended weekend before the school year begins for children across the United States.

According to booking data from AAA, a travel services organization, travel costs for the weekend are down by 2%. Meanwhile, international travel bookings have dropped by 4% compared to last year, per AAA.

Road trip lovers may also be pleased as fuel prices have stabilized around $3.50 per gallon, down from the national average of $3.81 a year earlier.

However, the increased number of travelers is expected to result in traffic congestion. “Drivers should expect severe traffic jams before the holiday weekend as commuters mix with travelers,” advised Bob Pishue, an analyst at transportation data provider INRIX.
