Economic Growth in Ukraine

KYIV (Reuters) – Ukraine's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 3.9% year-on-year in the first eight months of the year, according to the economy ministry.

The ministry also reported that GDP had grown by 3.5% year-on-year in August.

Yulia Svyrydenko, the first deputy prime minister and economy minister, noted that improved access to electricity had fueled economic growth and enhanced business and consumer confidence in the short term.

The transport, building, and retail sectors played significant roles in the economic expansion from January to August.

However, Russia's invasion severely impacted Ukraine's economy, resulting in a 29% GDP decline in 2022.

In 2023, thanks to foreign financial aid and the resilience of local businesses, the economy experienced a 5.3% increase.

Looking ahead to 2024, the government anticipates a slowdown in GDP growth to 3.5%, as businesses struggle with energy shortages and rely on costly imported electricity due to intensified Russian bombardments of Ukraine's power sector since March. These attacks have knocked out about half of the available generation capacity, leading to long blackouts nationwide.

Consequently, businesses need to invest in developing new energy-generating capabilities to cope with the ongoing challenges.
