Economic Growth in Ukraine

KYIV (Reuters) – Ukraine’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 3.9% year-on-year in the first eight months of the year, according to the economy ministry on Wednesday.

The ministry reported that GDP increased by 3.5% year-on-year in August.

Yulia Svyrydenko, first deputy prime minister and economy minister, attributed the economic growth to improved access to electricity over the past month, which boosted business and consumer confidence in the short term.

Key sectors driving this economic expansion from January to August include transport, building, and retail.

Ukraine’s economy has faced significant challenges due to Russia’s invasion, resulting in a GDP decline of about 29% in 2022.

Despite the hardships, aided by billions in foreign financial support and the resilience of Ukrainian businesses, the economy rebounded in 2023, with a growth rate of 5.3%.

However, businesses are struggling with severe energy shortages this year, leading the government to predict GDP growth will slow to 3.5% in 2024.

Since March, Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukraine’s power sector, reducing available generation capacity by approximately 50% and causing widespread blackouts throughout the country.

As a result, businesses have had to rely on more costly imported electricity and invest heavily in new energy generation capabilities.
