FCC to Review Undersea Communications Cable Security

Date: WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Federal Communications Commission will vote next month to review the security of the global network of undersea communications cables that manage nearly all the world's internet traffic.

Chair's Statement: FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel stated, "Over the past two decades, the technology, economics, and security challenges involving these systems have greatly changed, but FCC oversight has not."

Upcoming Vote: The commission will vote to undertake the first major comprehensive review of submarine cable rules since 2001. The FCC is considering new regulations to address the national security impacts of undersea cables responsible for over 95% of international internet traffic.
