WASHINGTON (Reuters) –

U.S. authorities have arrested a Turkish man suspected of attempting to violate sanctions by transporting oil from Venezuela, according to the Justice Department on Monday.

The U.S. reinstated sanctions on the Venezuelan oil company PDVSA in June, citing President Nicolas Maduro's failure to engage in talks with the political opposition and commit to fair elections.

In a statement, the Justice Department mentioned that 37-year-old Taskin Torlak allegedly conspired to illegally sell Venezuelan oil, utilizing deceit and trickery to conceal the oil's Venezuelan origin.

Torlak was apprehended in Miami on Saturday while trying to depart for Turkey.

The department revealed that Torlak and others rebranded and reflagged oil tankers and disabled electronic tracking systems, allegedly receiving tens of millions of dollars from PDVSA.

In June, Reuters reported that PDVSA started employing tankers that navigate off radar to supply oil to Cuba.

A significant portion of the tanker fleets owned by Venezuela and Cuba are subject to U.S. sanctions, restricting their travel.
