Metsera’s IPO Plans

(Reuters) – Metsera, a company focused on developing weight-loss drugs, announced its plans for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) on Monday, targeting a valuation of up to $1.78 billion in the U.S. market. This move seeks to leverage Wall Street’s strong demand for weight-loss treatments.

As hopes for a soft landing for the U.S. economy rise, alongside expectations of a more favorable regulatory atmosphere under the Donald Trump administration, many companies are looking to go public in 2025.

William Pickering, a senior analyst at Bernstein, commented, “In 2025, early signs have been encouraging — Metsera is one of six companies that announced IPO plans in January.” However, he cautioned against expecting significant increases in IPO activity for the year due to consistently high interest rates and disappointing post-IPO outcomes in 2023 and 2024.

Despite these challenges, the global weight-loss drug market is projected to be worth around $150 billion by the early 2030s, attracting heightened interest from investors in this rapidly expanding sector.

Based in New York City, Metsera plans to raise up to $292.2 million, offering 17.19 million shares priced between $15 and $17 each.

Biotech companies like BioAge Labs and MBX Biosciences have received positive receptions at their debuts, although they have since struggled and are trading below their IPO prices as of January 27.

Founded in 2022 by ARCH Venture and Population Health Partners, Metsera is working on injectable and oral drugs targeting obesity, utilizing the GLP-1 mechanism among others. GLP-1 medications, which slow digestion and increase feelings of fullness, are also under investigation for additional health benefits.

Metsera expects its shares to be listed on the Nasdaq Global Market under the ticker symbol “MTSR”. The underwriting for the offering is being managed by BofA Securities, Goldman Sachs, Evercore ISI, Guggenheim Securities, and Cantor.
