White House Crypto Chief David Sacks Confirms No Talks to Liquidate Gold Reserves

White House Crypto Chief David Sacks confirmed that the Trump administration is not currently discussing the sale of government gold reserves to acquire Bitcoin. However, key federal departments are looking into budget-neutral strategies to expand the newly announced Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.

> “There hasn’t been any talk about that,” Sacks said, addressing speculation about liquidating gold to support Bitcoin assets. “I see people speculating about that online.”

Sacks highlighted that decisions regarding financial maneuvers would rest with the Treasury Secretary and Commerce Secretary. “Ultimately, it will be up to the Treasury Secretary and the Commerce Secretary to determine whether there are budget-neutral ways to add to our Bitcoin Reserve,” he noted, emphasizing that no discussions have occurred yet regarding those potential strategies.

This announcement follows President Donald Trump’s executive order formally establishing the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, which includes approximately 200,000 BTC (valued around $17 billion at current prices) obtained through criminal and civil seizures.

According to the order, the Departments of Treasury and Commerce “shall develop strategies to acquire additional Government BTC, provided that such strategies are budget-neutral and do not impose additional costs on United States taxpayers.”

New allocations of taxpayer funds often need congressional approval, making budget neutrality vital for the administration from both legal and public perception angles.

The administration has also distinguished Bitcoin from other cryptocurrencies. A senior White House official stated that Bitcoin “deserves special treatment” compared to altcoins like Ethereum, Solana, XRP, and Cardano due to its security, decentralization, and lack of an issuing entity.
